So, Barkha Dutt tweeted this regarding period leaves.
To her, period leave would “ghettoize women”, and apparently, accounting for biological differences would strengthen biological determinism. What Dutt seems to be forgetting is that equality doesn't mean erasing biological differences, it means accounting for them. And when someone pointed this out to her in the replies to her tweet, someone said:

And so I asked this person:
"Not everyone needs period leaves", meaning some people do, right?
To which she replied:

And then I said:
That's an assumption. Do you have any citations or research to support your statement? Let's assume you're right, since when do "majority" dictate policies? Are policies made only for majority? You think people don't misuse sick leaves? Your moral high ground is highly misplaced.
The point of highlighting this exchange is to show how slowly but surely, India is moving towards being a majoritarian state. We can see it in the way we’re being turned into a Hindu Rashtra. We see it when Brahmins speak over and dominate any discourse about issues related to Dalit/Bahujan/Adivaisi/Muslim people. We see it in the “One Nation, One Language” hegemony being pushed by the state. And now we see it with women who think that just because their periods aren’t painful, period leaves are nothing but a ploy to gain brownie points and “strengthen biological determinism”.
So, If you’re a Brahmin, Hindu man- congratulations, everything this state does will be catered to you and tailored for you.
I'm reading this a loooooong time after you posted it, BUUUUT as usual, well-written. Short, but perfect. I think 'succinct' is the right word for this.
I roll my eyes EVERY single time I read Barkha Dutt's tweet now. In a way, can't *exactly* blame her, because it reminds me of how women are caught into patriarchy and misogyny so easily. :/ I'm pretty sure even I used to think of certain things that way. I hope she changes her mind someday.
And in case anyone reads this, do watch the UAPA video, it's informative (and still somewhat light-hearted!).
